NaBloPoMo Unofficial 13: Ugh

Spent the day doing somethings, but not totally in Responsible Adult Mode. Watched a bit more of That Pony Show, including "Over a Barrel". I am kind of :| that people did not figure out that this shit is not on.

In other fandoms, good gravy, I want to make this happen.

In IRL news, my dad's given me a carpet for my bedroom, and I kind of want to move things about. I hope to get it done this week.

Also, I'd like some advice: I've had some awful luck with bags for my books and laptop. Namely, the straps are breaking from the strain. Any recommendations for messanger-type bags that will carry a 15.6" laptop and some books? Thanks in advance.

NaBloPoMo Unofficial 12: Faffing About

I did almost nothing today. It was fucking epic.

Though yeah, a small part of me is very guilty for wasting the day like I did.
chofi: (Default)
You know the rest.

So, started watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, even though I'm aware of the fail. Don't know why, exactly.

I finished The Kingdom of Gods. I was kind of "meh" about the sequel hooks, but they're easy enough to ignore. I was rather pleased that a romance between two men was treated as No Big. I was kind of "meh" that some of the most interesting stuff happened off screen. It's happened before in the series, but I think because reading The Kingdom of Gods so recently, it seems more pronounced. I still want to reread The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms for my Nahadoth = Slender Man thing, so there's that.

While I'm here, I'll make my announcement for Winter Card Exchanges I'll do the same thing as last year: Give me a fandom, prompt, and your address, and I'll send off a 100-word drabble sometime before the next ice age for the end of December. Comments will be screened.

Fandoms with Stuff That's Seen the Light of the Internets: Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy XIII, G.I. Joe, < lj-user="mercverse"> AU, Soul Series, The Twelve Kingdoms

Fandoms with Stuff That I am Willing to Attempt: Sengoku Basara, Suikoden 1 - 3, Temeraire, The Hunger Games. Attempts to cross over any of the above will also be accepted.

So, like a measurable chunk of the internets, I got into A Song of Ice and Fire thanks to HBO. Managed to READ ALL THE BOOKS, and enjoyed them, for the most part. Still side-eying that we don't get a non-Westrosi female who is not portrayed as a) subservient, b) superstitious, or c) evil.

Regardless, the fandom is a pretty fun place to lurk about. With that, I give you The Inn at the Crossroads It's glorious. For example, here is Sister's Stew. Or Trout Baked in Clay. And, of course Bowls of Brown. (I'm linking the hearty, warm stuff because it's that time of year here. My mind is on thick stews.)

NaBloPoMo 9: To Battle

My body is in the middle of fighting off some dread illness. I tend to associate this with eating beef patties. The first time netted me food poisoning. This time, it's a headache and sore throat and fever. This is very upsetting, because I really like beef patties. It's also very upsetting because I'm not ill enough to merit calling off from work, and I'm not at 100%. So, I get to chug orange juice and take my medicine and hope for the best.

I also fought and lost with some other base instincts and bought The Kingdom of the Gods before rereading the rest of the Inheritance Trilogy like I'd wanted to do. I'm... kind of at around page 200. Sigh. I think I'll finish The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms anyhow, because I have some sort of off the wall idea of Nahadoth being a form of the Slender Man (That should be the other way around, shouldn't it?), and I need to take notes on why I suddenly came upon this idea.

My thoughts on The Kingdom of the Gods so far are that it's kind of fun that Sieh taps on the fourth wall pretty often. (It's not like there wasn't any fourth wall tapping in the past two books...) The formula of "main character Starts Shit unaware, must find out the Shit Started, prevent Further Shit from Happening" is force, but I find I don't mind.
chofi: (Default)
Firstly, fuck yeah my passport photo came in. The photographer was trying to make me laugh, so while the photo I got when I was 15 was all SRS BSNS, this is has me smiling much, much wider than I do under circumstances that do not involve someone tickling me.

Secondly, I think that the school thinks I'm some sort of Twi-hard. I was asked by one of the other teachers if I thought he resembled RPatz, and one of my students invited me to see Breaking Dawn with her. So... fangirl reader automatically means Twi-hard? Meh, whatever.

I'm reading The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms again in preparation for reading The Kingdom of the Gods, and the fact that the setting is high fantasy and yet has indoor toilets still kind of floors me. (Yeah, I know that indoor toilets were a feature of places before running water, but still, things like conversations happening in the ladies' room and mundane utility for charms to warm the toilet seats is amazing to me.)

I've been looking through Perfect Bucket List, and I'm amazed at some of the stuff that I can check off of this list. I've been hella lucky.

So, I mentioned before that I was reading In Other Worlds, which has led me to want to read The Handmaid's Tale again. So, I had to look around my bookshelves for the thing. I decided to grab it while I was getting ready for school, when I was without my glasses. So, it took me about five seconds to find the thing on my shelves in the semi-darkness without my glasses. Hooray for good cover design and for my Virgo-esque need to alphabetize my fiction.

Oh, and I managed to get through The Handmaid's Tale in a day. Awesome sauce.

Also, everyone on the Internet is fired because I didn't hear that The Kingdom of Gods was out already. (Okay, so I thought it'd be out this month, but still. Everyone is fired.) Fortunately N.K. Jemisin is awesome and posts the first three chapters of her books on her website along with other goodies.

NaBloPoMo Unofficial 6: Fall Back

From Writer's Block on ElJay:

What would you do with your time if you had one more hour in the day?

Sleep, play video games, read something, or actually write. Depends on where, exactly, this extra hour is going to be. Can I change where it is every day, or am I stuck? Can I break it into pieces?

Why am I over thinking a lulzy Writer's Block prompt?
chofi: (Default)
So, along with reading things--I've started this meta writer's reflection thing on writing SF by Margaret Atwood In Other Worlds--I'm playing games. Something besides achievement unlocking like I do with the PS3. I'm in the middle of FF6 Advance (Just got Setzer) and I don't know if I'm allowed to be jarred/disappointed with some parts of the new translation. You see, I didn't play FF6 until it came out with Final Fantasy Anthology, so it wasn't part of my early formative years. Also, no one wants to hear my Shadow = Snake Eyes ideas. No one. I blame [personal profile] artimusdin for making the two ninja live inside my head.

I'm also playing Civilization 5. Oh, Civ, my precious crack. It's just what a micro-managing Virgo like me needs. I love how culture bombing is now an actual thing rather than something I did on instinct with Egypt. Also, the achivement names. Those achievement names.

In Which I Rant... About a Muhmorpuguh?

Same old, same old. I'll get around to the prompts, really! I just... er... Okay, so Nova Fabula is my mistress again and I might be doing FFX-HD after I'm done and then maybe something nice and old school like Suikoden afterwards? Fine. I'll shut up about my gaming queue and get to what the hell the title is about.

Driving to work, I heard NPR talking about Omnitopia. I'm still weirded out when NPR does stuff about games. Like the time when All Things Considered talked about FFXIII or when Sound Check discovered Guilty Gear. I just... NPR is my SRS BIZ time, and they're talking about MMO's. Well, okay, so we're talking about people with more money than God, so I guess it counts. It's still about games, so... yeah... Tumblr, being Tumblr is doing a collective squeefest and someone over on Fandom Lounge started in on some of the 'cosoms that are available on the thing.

Okay, so I was pretty tempted. I... I still don't know, though. I've always been a console sort of girl, and I'm still leery about subscription services for games.

Oh! and Clairvoyant is also following people spamming the shit out of Tumblr feeds and freaking DW of all places for Infinite Worlds. Nothing wanky yet, but I'll expect once the Omnitopia expansion hits there there will be something. Maybe an 8.8 sort of something? That said, I've had to deal with paid squeeing (Come on, like you can't tell...) over IW when I go to work. The joys of being in a college town. It's bad enough that I can see one of Infinity's motherships from some parts of my town, I also get to see and hear it when I go to work.

I guess I can be glad that no one's spammed my journals yet.

Isn't there supposed to be Epic Amounts of Shit between Dev Logan and Phil Sorensen? Can someone do a Bad Penny on this? I am hella bored and want something to read over the weekend... ETA: And TVTropes comes through!

Okay, time to actually work on the queue. Or be a good girl and plan for next week. Oh, whatever.

what the hell you just read )

I'm in a phase where I'm absorbing more media than I'm turning out. I'm in the middle of reading a few books and playing/achievement unlocking some games.

One of my resolutions this year was to be more mindful about what I read, and I'm finally (ha) getting around to it. So, I was wandering around Barnes and Noble, like you do, and I saw Omnitopia Dawn. The only reason I got it was because Diane Duane, a wanka, wrote it. Also, I'd seen it reference on io9 a while back.

My Thoughts. Also, spoilers. )

This was a pretty quick read, and rather fun. There was also a shout out to Fandom Wank that had me seal-clapping in my car. I think I'll continue the series as a tachi-yomi thing, or maybe through the library.

Who the hell thought this was a good idea? On top of the fail that is "skinny" equalling a be all and end all and "fat" as something to be avoided,

But don't you know that being fat is un--

This is not about health. This is about appearances and you damn well know it. And we also have the idea that people are or should be preoccupied with how they look in relation to their friends. No one wants to be the DUFF, after all.

God, [personal profile] chofi, it's just a tee shirt! There are more important things to worry about!

That may be true, that may not be true. This is something that's hitting close to home after I took a few hits to my psyche thanks to drive by body policing today. I'm in a place to call this shit out, so I am.

And now a musical interlude...

What I expected:

What I got:

Bonus: "Danse Macabre" is also hella fun to play, even if those damn runs at the end are murder.

I've done several things that would be "post worthy" since I last updated, but since it's been a while, it would seem... stale, especially in internet time. So, I'm going to start fresh and icon spam icons that I've promised to various people in the past.

For [profile] yohtan:

This is something of a running gag, but it's about being a lurker. Only using other words.

From [profile] fateofshadow via [personal profile] jukeboxhound:

[profile] fateofshadow mentioned this quote in a comment thread, and I said I'd icon it.

And finally, from [personal profile] jukeboxhound:

This is from "This Isn't Going to Wash Out". I love this line like burning. (Appropriate, I suppose...) So, it's going to be icon'd.

And I'm spent.

Gift Post the Fourth: For tir_synni

Title: "The One that I Want"
Fandom/original: Final Fantasy VII
Characters: Zack and Cloud
Rating: R
Word count: 100
Notes: [personal profile] tir_synni wanted Zack and Cloud crack. And then there was this post. Yeah, now you know about the title, and knowing is half the battle.

Cloud know everyone was staring, which was the point. He and Aerith--she was... enthousiastic when Cloud mentioned his crush--had spent a week planning.

So here he was: in leather jacket, boots, and indecently tight pants and approaching Zack. And Cloud forgot what do to first.

Zack saw him and grinned. "Why the makeover, Cloud?"

"You... don't like the leather?" Cloud forgot about keeping his voice lower.

"The leather's great, but you didn't have to do a 180 just for me." Zack's face took on a wicked smirk. "Though now, I've got an excuse to take off your pants."

Title: "When I Was"
Fandom/original: Final Fantasy VII
Characters: Cloud and Sephiroth
Rating: R
Word count: 100
Notes: [personal profile] jukeboxhound wanted Sephiroth/Cloud, with the prompt "There was history here." Of course, of course my brain goes into the angst place and never looks back.

Cuts heal if you didn't pick at the scabs, yet Cloud picked. Memories flowed and he was sixteen again and scanning for a mix of silver and black in the middle of the blaze.

He was sixteen again and swallowing his moans and ignoring sticky sheets and silver hair was everywhere but they didn't mind it. Later, Zack wouldn't mind Cloud's baggy eyes and marked neck.

He was sixteen again and being impaled. "Don't press your luck." Press against the sword instead, and move away from the brink.

He was twenty-three again and bore scars. There was history here.
