So, managed to get past the stage I stopped my tachiyomi in Storm Front. Most of the questions I have, surprise, are about world building. First, is Harry's problem with technology beyond circa 1940 ever addressed in canon/in meta? My current theory is the mundane world and the magical world being ~*~torn assunder~*~ by the discovery of atomic power. Now I am become the death of magic, destroyer of worlds? My other current theory is that Butcher just wanted to keep the film noir aesthetic around Harry and this was the best way to do it.
Next: "Gentleman" Johnny Marcone. Gentleman Johnny. Gentleman. Johnny. You don't do this kind of thing to someone with American social studies teacher certification. You don't. Now I want some sort of WTF Revolutionary War AU where Harry has problems with Franklin stoves and lightning rods and polygraphs.
Thoughts on The Wise Man's Fear, let me show you them.
I admit I have a tsundere relationship with Patrick Rothfuss. I'm all "WAT IS THIS FAIL" with Kingkiller, and yet I eat the shit like candy. That said, if this book was a JRPG, this would be the part where you're doing sidequests and grinding. PLOT. WHERE DID YOU GO? Some of the meta jokes were amusing. It's nice that the side cast isn't as much of a sausage fest in this book, and that it isn't entirely in Kvothe's thrall. It kind of feels like Rothfuss was like "Okay, I need to get the hell out of Magical MIT/CalTech, get in more female characters, and make Kvothe start showing flaws."
Thoughts on X-Men, let me show you them.
So, First Class was all that was promised with the Charles/Erik subtext, and with Chuckles Not Getting His Privilege. The personal WTF arrived with the selection of the team. Yeah, they weren't going to use the original comic team because of plot... things. (Although the movie apparently played merry hell with the movie continuity. I wouldn't know, because I only saw the first film and this one.) So, we've got Banshee, Beast, Havok, Darwin, Mystique, and not Warren Worthington!Angel/Tempest. Hooray, no Smurfette. And then Darwin dies and Tempest and Mystique go off with Magneto. So... yeah. Yeah, Moira's still on the "good" side, but then Charles fucks with her memories. The hell, movie.
