Finished The Name of the Wind about a week ago, and now I'm trying to tackle a work on childhood in England during the Middle Ages, because I'm a giant nerd. I've been saying repeatedly that I wnat to punch Kvothe, the main character of The Name of the Wind in the face for a while now. By the end of the book, that had waned a bit, because Rothfuss knows how to write about that feeling of needing more money for student loans. (That said, Devi was kind of awesome, and there needs to be more written about her. Anyway...) So, I still wanted to punch Kvothe in the face, but maybe with a lighter blow or use a series of slaps instead. And then, readers, then came this:
I have known her longer, my smile said. True, you have been inside the circle of her arms, tasted her mouth, felt the warmth of her, and that is something I have never had. But there is a part of her that is only for me. You cannot touch it, no matter how hard you try. And after she has left you I will still be here, making her laugh. My light shining in her. I will be here long after she has forgotten your name.Kvothe is a Nice Guy ™. Awesome. Now I want to punch him in the face and knee him in the balls.
