[fst] Mercverse. Down in the Old City.

I've been wanting to do this for a while. So, Mercverse FST. I've tried to tie into as many bits of the canons as I could.

Please comment if you download.

The Mercverse, or Heresy and Revolution for Fun and Profit

Well, since just about everyone here is going to be into the 'verse already, in depth explanations will be moot.

For the rest of you, this is an alternate universe to Final Fantasy VII thought up by [livejournal.com profile] icedark_elf. This is the canon: Geddoe Cloud is the immortal leader of a pack of mercenaries: the mage Sephiroth, the "little bit more than human" Zack, and the twin half-demons Vincent and Chaos. The rest of us just play around with it and generally have fun. For me, that meant musical accompaniment.

Intrigued? Get thee to [livejournal.com profile] mercverse.

Cover Art

This took something like ten minutes in Photoshop. Really. It's a night scene of Tokyo, because when you think magic-plus-cyber/steam punk, some sort of image of Tokyo is involved. (Thanks a lot, William Gibson.)

The title of the FST comes from a line from "Geki! Teikokukagekidan", going to show that I am insane. There is no Sakura Taisen on this FST. Most of the tracks are of my own choosing, some were stolen adapted from the various Final Fantasy VII FST's over at [livejournal.com profile] fst.

Rewrite - Asian Kung Fu Generation

Wanting to spit out anything I can contrive,
'cause there's no other proof I truly am alive.
The future I should have taken by the hand,
A conflict between dignity and what I demand.

If Cloud is somehow involved in something, "Rewrite" is put in the FST, pretty much as a "screw it, it's time to change things" song. So it's not just random crap based on titles. So there.

Boulevard of Broken Dreams - Green Day

Read between the lines.
What's fucked up and everything's alright.
Check my vital signs,
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone.

Let's guess who this is for. Points off if you said Zack. Yeah, Cloud needs the emo. Well, I suppose that this is during those in-between times when it really is him. Then he picks up some punk kid, a mage, and some twins and things look up.

Battle without Honor or Humanity - Tomoyasu Hotei

Instrumental. You know that Zack practices strutting around to this song, because he's a dork like that.

Mars, the Bringer of War - Holst

Instrumental. This one was a last minute thing, based on [livejournal.com profile] icedark_elf's writing about Sephiroth, magic, and rhythms. And so, badassery in 5/4 time.

One Man Army - Our Lady Peace

Take a deep breath, give them the finger
Are you worried
That your thoughts are not quite clear?
(Twitch)
Overlooked, unfit appearance

I suppose the twins work in tandem most of the time, so I can get number to agree like that. And there is the feeling of shrugging off outside influences and go on with what they have to do. And in most cases, this is mass destruction.

Dance of the Little Swans - Tchaikovsky

Instrumental. I couldn't leave the plushies out.

Talkin' About a Revolution - Tracy Chapman

Poor people gonna rise up,
And get their share.
Poor people gonna rise up,
And take what's theirs.

Tifa will, one day, stick it to The Man Shinra, whooping one Turk ass at a time.

Coming Up - Ani Difranco

Our father who art in a penthouse
sits in his 37th floor suite
and swivels to gaze down
at the city he made me in.

Even though she's made it out of Shinra's immediate control, Aeris still has to deal with Turks running around and trying to bring her back. Once she's got things organized, she's going to fight back, damn it.

The Flower of Carnage - Meiko Kaji

I'm a woman who walks at the brink of life and death
who's emptied my tears many moons ago.
All the compassion tears and dreams
The snowy nights and tomorrow hold no meaning.

Yuffie is a lot more badass in Mercverse. You'd have to be more badass, if you were part of a crime family with rival clans on one side and The Man Shinra on the other.

Chant - Miki Higashino

When I met you,
I received life.
When I lost you,
I learned of death.

We need more chanty emo. And this particular song can involve itself in various relationships, the most obvious is Cloud with any of the mortals he's befriended over the years.

The Flowers of Guatemala - R.E.M.

There's something here I find hard to ignore
There's something that I've never seen before
Amanita is the name, they cover over everything

The flowers cover everything
They cover over everything (Amanita is the name)
The flowers cover everything.

Just because the royal family owns a multi-national corporation doesn't mean anything at all. Really.

Withered Earth - Kiyoshi Yoshida

Instrumental. I wanted to use some version of this song for the soundtrack, because I like it that much. Suikoden propaganda is go. The version from the Asian Collections won out because there needed to be something mystical for Squall and Company.

The Promised Land - Nobuo Uematsu

This song has associated itself with the workings of the Cetra. Where there is Aeris, there is Cetra. Where there is an immortal fucking around with the fabric of creation, there is Cetra.

Getsumei Fuuei (Quiet Version) - Kunihiko Ryo

In the center of memory, I have kept searching
For a person's warmth, in the lonely rain.

Yes, more emo. Shut up. I think of this one as an overall theme for the Strife family, with Cloud's screwed up parentage.

Getsumei Fuuei - Mika Arikasa

Though this body rots away, do not doubt I will keep running
To the end of that world, until I reach the rainbow

A more upbeat version of the previous song, which fits in with the more modern parts of Mercverse.

Bonus
The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny - Lemon Demon

This is the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny.
Good guys, bad guys, and explosions as far as the eye can see,
and only one will survive, I wonder who it will be?
This is the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny.

Because crossovers are fun. So are fight scenes.

Princes of the Universe - Queen

I am immortal, I have inside me blood of kings.
I have no rival, no man can be my equal.

Enough said.

Smut - Tom Lehrer

Por-
Nographic pictures I adore.
Indecent magazines galore.
I like them more,
If they're hard core.

Among the metaphysics, the dystopia, the demi-cyberpunk, and one huge farking history lesson, there is something which makes us all happy.

And now, if you'd like them all, here is the zip.

You inlcuded the Smut song! It's like the (slash)fangirls theme song *loves*
(For filth, I'm glad to say,
Is in the mind of the beholder.
When correctly viewed,
Everything is lewd.)
I had a prof who once quoted it "more, more, I'm still not satisfied". I'm not sure he expected anyone to actually recognize the song as he was rather vague about the details, but I spend the rest of that class with it stuck in my head.

badassery in 5/4 time yummmmmmmmm

Downloaded the zip. Looks wonderful ^_^

Oddly enough, no. I had 1/4th of it. ^^ Now I have 3/4ths though.

*takes the zip* Thanks for this great fst! All songs are well put together and fit well the universe, heterogeneous but coherent (somehow XD;)

And you totally win for the bonus songs!

Thank you. I had to stick in "Princes of the Universe". It's required when there are immortals. "Ultimate Showdown" is cracky, and "Smut", well, it's "Smut".

Came in via the Mercverse archive.

I love to see how others apply music to characters and situations. Your choice for Zack strutting around make me grin. So very true, and I can also see him practising taking his sunglasses on and off in front of the mirror too. And also the cool guy look he'd give to anyone that took his fancy! ;D

Zack's the ladies' man. I'm sure that even though some of the charisma is natural, most takes lots of practice to get right.

*downloads to listen to* I haven't heard half the songs in this, so I must listen to it, but I'm not unzipping it until after I get an external hard drive. I'll comment again when I listen to it.

Err... I kind of nuked all of the things from my domain in January. I'm at work now, so once I get home, I'll upload it a few file sharing places.
